Peterborough is a cathedral city, situated on the River Nene. The population is currently undergoing expansion and a £1 billion regeneration of the city centre is under way.

Designated a New Town in 1967, there were to be four townships. The last of these was never built, but a township called Hampton, is now taking shape. Queensgate, was opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1982.

Peterborough is experiencing an economic boom. Peterborough is the most successful economy in the East of England. Peterborough was designated one of four environment cities, now working to become the UK's environment capital.

Peterborough enjoys a range of events including the East of England Show, Peterborough Festival and CAMRA beer festival.

The Key Theatre reflects the culture Peterborough offers. The Broadway Theatre is one of the largest in the region. The John Clare Theatre is home to the Peterborough Film Society. The Cresset in Bretton, provides a wide range of events. Peterborough has a 13-screen Cinema, an ice rink and two indoor pools.

Peterborough United known as The Posh, has been the local football team since 1934. Peterborough City Rowing Club is located at Thorpe Meadows. Peterborough Phantoms are the city's ice hockey team, playing at the East of England Ice Rink. Speedway is held at the East of England Showground.

Peterborough has five radio stations. The Evening Telegraph is the city's newspaper, published Monday to Saturday.

The Cathedral Church was originally founded as a monastery in AD 655 and re-built in its present form between 1118 and 1238.
